On Tuesday 6th January we had our first meeting in Picturehouse. Screen 1 seats just over 200 and we came close to filling it, as members listened to a fascinating talk about the old Chester Asylum.

The 2025 Christmas Quiz in St Columbas was as popular as ever, with 16 teams taking part (my team came last). As well as Christmas jumpers, lovely mince pies, chocolate biscuits and sweets were there in abundance (at the beginning, anyway). More pictures below and there is a report in Chester Times..

How to find and watch the Dee bore: Instructions from our recent speaker Paul Hyde can be found here.

Recently (November 2025) we heard violinist and local busker Philip Chidell play and talk to us about his life.

Well done to Chester member (and now membership secretary) Liz Eccleston who was the runner-up in the National u3a’s first ever essay writing competition. The competition was open to all u3a members and asked for essays which celebrated a person, policy, invention or idea that has had a positive impact on society. Liz’s essay was entitled Let’s Cut To The Chase! in which she explored the invention of scissors. Find out more at https://www.u3a.org.uk/latest-news/winner-essay-writing-competition including the chance to read Liz’s award-winning essay along with the other 19 shortlisted entries. Liz is shown below with her certificate and prize. Liz gave a memorable presentation of her essay at our recent Showcase in Storyhouse.
