The Art Appreciation 2 Group meets on Wednesdays, usually via Zoom.
This group doesn't try for history lessons but we do discuss art and artists and try to fit into their historical context. We meet monthly for those discussions but we visit galleries two or three times a year to take in exhibitions.
The group is currently meeting monthly via Zoom to discuss subject matter chosen beforehand. Subject is either a genre or a particular artist or artists.
We have no financial obligations, no car sharing, no requirement re knowledge or experience and we communicate by email. We are able to accept new members SO LONG AS the current position lasts but obviously if we decide to change then everything else will change.
If you are interested in joining us, please contact Val artappreciation2 for further information.

Art Appreciation 2, by Terry McHugh
As we reported in our last offering, we finished our stint on Photography with the iconic image of construction workers taking a meal break sat on a girder high in the sky in New York.
The following month we discussed in depth presentations of two famous paintings. The first was Primavera by Botticelli and the second Gauguin’s Where do we come from? After some debate we opted for Sculpture as our next major topic, and it was an inspired choice. We took tentative steps into what had previously been an almost closed book.
Over the following months we explored the work of many of the great names and almost ran out of superlatives. Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne, two statues of David by both Donatello and Michelangelo, Rodin’s The Burghers of Calais and three Pietàs of the Virgin Mary with the dead Christ by Michelangelo. You could argue the case for such examples as the finest of fine art masterpieces.
We also found time for Barbara Hepworth, Anish Kapoor, Isamu Noguchi and a little local cameo of the statue of Sir Thomas Brassey, railway engineer, situated outside Chester station. A really rewarding few months.

This took us up to our usual pre-Christmas coffee get together in the Cathedral refectory. In our one meeting since then we had a relaxing, low key Zoom meeting enabling members to share the pictures that were displayed in their homes along with explanations for their choices (if they wished to share that). Some famous names e.g. Matisse and Georgia O’Keefe but one member has her own work on display. Cheers Louise.
