Meg Parkes - The Secret Art of Survival: the unrecognised British war artists of WWII Far East captivity
Meg Parkes is an Honorary Research Fellow of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). She spoke about the School’s longest running project, working with former Far East prisoners of war veterans (known as FEPOW) held captive by the Japanese during World War II. She has run an oral history study interviewing 67 veterans and co-authored three books on LSTM’s FEPOW medical history research. Meg shared images from a major exhibition that she cocurated of British FEPOW artwork – Secret Art of Survival – at Liverpool’s Victoria Gallery & Museum, which was the first time that most of the 100 exhibits had been seen in public. 87 members attended.
