Mike Royden has been a teacher and lecturer for over 30 years after studying History and Archaeology at the University of Liverpool. He has made various appearances on TV and Radio, including the BBC programmes “Heir Hunters” and “Who Do You Think You Are?” To
coincide with Remembrance Sunday, Mike will talk about the First World War, but with the focus on experiences at home rather than on the Western Front. With specific reference to Chester and the locality, this will include the organisation of volunteers at the start of the war, the Old Pals regiments, conditions at home under the Defence of the Realm Act, rationing, air raids, internment, conscription, conscientious objectors, the changing role of women, and the aftermath of the war including war memorials and remembrance. 116 attendees.
