Crown Green Bowling Group meet on Wednesday mornings.
The fundamental aim of the group is to provide an opportunity for the development of crown green bowling skills at all levels, and beginners and experienced bowlers are all welcome.
The group meets at Upton Pavilion bowling green on a Wednesday morning from 10.00 until 13.00 hours, weather permitting. The season is limited to play from early April to mid to late September each year. The 2024 season starts on Wednesday 3rd April.
The game is played according to the rules of the British Crown Green Bowling Association (BCGBA) and is one of the few games that can be described as a ‘sport for all’. The laws and rules of the game are available through the website: https://crowngreenbowls.sharepoint.com/Pages/LawsandRules.aspx
Generally players have their own equipment, and guidance on the choice of equipment is provided. For beginners, Upton Pavilion have a stock of equipment that may be hired and comprises bowls weighing between 2lb 2 oz and 2lb 12 oz. Members have bought equipment via the internet or from suppliers based in Wrexham or elsewhere. Flat shoes without heels must be worn on the green.
Beginners will be provided with a free opportunity for their first experience. A season fee is chargeable (£35.00 in 2025) for the whole season. The fee enables members to pay at the reserved time on Wednesday and any other time in the week when the green is not reserved.
Members can take advantage of the coffee and tea facilities provided by the Pavilion staff. The group primarily uses email communication and members without email use email buddies.
Assistance and instruction are offered on all aspects of the game. This includes equipment choice, rules of the game, delivery, measuring, etiquette etc. Generally members play in pairs or as a foursome, although it is possible to play as a three.
